Every dancer shares the same goal—become as good as possible as quickly as possible. Of course, practice is the number one way to improve your dance skills. Here are some other tips to help you become the best dancer you can be.

  1. Enroll at a great dance studio: Not all dance academies near San Jose are created equal. Find a studio with state-of-the-art dance facilities, qualified instructors, and performance/competition teams that meet your expectations. Whether you’re new to dance, or you feel like you’re no longer progressing at your current studio, consider enrolling at Dance Academy USA in Cupertino.
  2. Choose a dance style you love: If you hope to become a better dancer, your heart must be in it. Otherwise, when the difficulty increases, you may be tempted to give up. If you’re unsure of which dance style is right for you, consider attending a recital to see which music and dance moves speak to you the most.
  3. Work on your posture: Poor technique and bad posture can inhibit your progress. Focus on standing up straight with your abs engaged, lowering your shoulders, and holding your head high. If an instructor corrects your posture, heed their advice if you hope to become a better dancer.
  4. Build muscle memory: In other words, practice, practice, practice. The more you do the choreography, the faster your body will learn the moves by heart. Just make sure you build muscle memory based on correct posture and techniques.
  5. Review choreography outside of class: Even if you don’t have a place to practice full-out, you can mark the dance or even go over the choreography in your head. This way, you’ll return to dance class the following week ready to learn the next steps.
  6. Stretch every day: Nearly all dance styles require excellent flexibility to reach advanced difficulty levels. Being flexible also decreases the chance of injury. Therefore, you should make stretching a daily habit.
  7. Leave your troubles at the door: When you walk into a dance academy, that’s your chance to relax. Don’t bring your problems into class. Instead, let the music and the movements of your body help you unwind after a stressful day.
  8. Think positively: It’s easy to get down on yourself while struggling to learn a difficult new move, but positive self-talk is the key to improving your dance skills.
  9. Perform for others: Dancing on stage is much different from practicing in class. The added pressure might make you nervous, but it will help you become a better dancer.
  10. Never give up: Some days, you may be tired and unfocused. The key to overcoming this challenge is to acknowledge the way you feel and work hard in spite of it.
