Rehearsals are Friday, June 9th at the California Theatre

Please click here for Dress Rehearsal times, Recital Showtimes and more. For Friday Dress Rehearsals, dancers and parents will enter through the Market Street entrance to the California Theater, 345 S. 1st Street, San Jose. Please arrive 15 minutes before your scheduled rehearsal time. Dancers should be totally dressed, hair and makeup done and ready to go on-stage. Proceed to the main auditorium, take a seat in the audience and wait until your child’s class is called to go backstage. Rehearsals generally take about 1.5 hours. Dancers may leave after their last routine, if they do not want to stay for the rest of the rehearsal. Parents can take pictures and videos. During the actual recitals no cameras, videos, or phones are allowed.

Recital Drop-off (before the show) for all DAU dancers – except Production Company

Dancers will enter the California Theatre through the, Market Street Lobby Entrance/Exit Door. The spot will be clearly marked with signs and activity. Please be at that spot no later than 45 minutes before show time and allow enough time for parking. Upon reaching the Market Street Lobby (Exit) Door, dancers will be escorted by a DAU staff member, Teacher Assistant or parent-volunteer to their assigned dressing rooms. Do not bring extra clothing, shoes, food, or play items to the theater – and please make sure your dancer is in their costume, ready to go.

Recital Drop-off (before the show) for Production Company dancers

Production Company dancers will enter the theatre through the, Market Street Stage Right Entrance

Recital Pick-up (after the show) for Intro to Dance, Creative Dance, Pre-Hip Hop, and Child Combo Classes

All dancers will participate in the finale at the end of the show. For parents of Creative Dance, Intro to Dance, Pre Hip Hop and Child Combo classes (ballet/jazz and tap/jazz): your child will be escorted from the stage directly to the Market Street Stage Right Entrance (inside the building). They will be supervised the entire time until they are safely back in your hands. At the completion of the show, you will exit the theatre through the Market Street Lobby Exit Door; then, turn right and walk about 30 yards (towards San Carlos) to the Market Street Stage Right Entrance. One by one, we will ask parents to come in and pick-up their child. Please only send one parent for pick-up; this whole process should take no longer than about 15 minutes and will be calm and organized. After reuniting with your young dancer, you can meet up with family and friends inside or outside the theatre and take pictures and celebrate your dancer’s accomplishments.

Recital Pick-up (after the show) for all other age groups and dancers

Please coordinate a meeting spot with your child INSIDE the California Theatre. Rehearsal, while you are on site, is a good time to talk with your child about a meet-up spot. Note: the meet-up location should not be the dressing room or outside the walls of the theatre. The best general location is, the upstairs or downstairs foyer areas; they are HUGE and there are tons of spots to choose from. We do not recommend that you use the Market Street Lobby as a meet-up spot. This area will be heavily congested after the show. After reuniting with your dancer, you can take pictures inside or outside the theatre as you wish and celebrate your dancer’s accomplishments. Flowers for your dancer on sale at the recital

Flowers to present to your dancer will be sold at each recital show by our competition team, Production Company, for $10. Look for the table in the lobby. Please bring cash, and if possible, exact change.

Where will my child be during the actual recital show?

Dancers will wait in their assigned dressing rooms, supervised by parent volunteers, during the show. All dancers in Creative Dance and Intro to Dance class will be taken to Level 2. All other dancers with 1 or 2 numbers per show will report to Level 3. All dancers with 3 or more numbers per show will be on the Lower Level. We will have TA’s and staff members take dancers to the appropriate levels. Any dancers on Level 3 who only have 1 number in the show will be escorted to the main auditorium to watch the half of the show in which they are not performing. We will provide water to all dancers in the dressing rooms. No food is allowed on any level backstage. Dancers should only bring the items that they need to perform to the dressing room (e.g., costume, tights, dance shoes, bobby pins). The less dancers bring, the less they have to lose.

What do I do with my child’s hair?

Creative and Intro to Dance girls have a half up/half down, either curled or straight. All ballet dancers wear their hair in a bun lined up with the top of their ears. All other dancers (Combo Ballet/Jazz, Combo Tap/Jazz included) wear their hair in a single pony tail lined up with the top of their ears. Water and gel work well to keep their hair from coming loose.

What about tights for my daughter?

Please refer to your blue sheet or ask your teacher for the correct color tights for your routine.

If you wear pink tights, you need Capezio Ballet Pink.

If you wear tan tights, you need Capezio Light Suntan.

If you wear fishnets, you need Capezio Light Suntan and Body Wrappers Black Fishnets.

If you do not wear tights, please remember there should be no visible panties or socks.

How will I get my child’s recital pictures?

Pictures will be delivered to the studio office by June 5 and you can pick them up in the office. We will take any pictures not picked up to the theater with us on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Be sure to pick up your child’s pictures.

If I haven’t purchased tickets yet, how can I get them?

Click here to purchase tickets online. You may buy tickets at the theater on the day of the recital, but we tend to have full shows and it would be wisest to get them ahead of time.

When do classes end?

Regular classes run through the evening of Thursday, June 8th. Beginning Friday, June 9th, all DAU Staff and students will be at the California Theatre for Dress Rehearsal and Recital. For summer, we are offering a wide variety of camps and intensives. Fall classes will begin on August 7th, please click here if you haven’t registered yet.
