Ms. Jane was born in Fort Bragg, North Carolina - an army brat (and very proud of her military heritage)! As the daughter of a three-war veteran (World War II, Korea, and Vietnam), Jane was always on the move - next stop, Tokyo, Japan where she began her dancing career at the enthusiastic age of four. Jane feels blessed to be the product of a multi-cultural family with her mother 100% Korean and her American-born father (born in Alabama and reared in Arkansas) and to have the opportunity to live and work (later in life) all over the world. She moved to Sunnyvale when she was seven years old and lived there until she married Jim Carter in 1988.
Ms. Jane's first experience with teamwork was when she became a cheerleader at Mango Jr. High School (now Sunnyvale Junior High School). She then moved on to Fremont High School where she began cheerleading her freshman year. Her most memorable high school experience was being named the leader of the nationally recognized Fremont High School Featherettes. The Featherettes (at that time), were truly one of the top drill teams in the country!
Ms. Jane earned her bachelor's degree from San Jose State University where she was a member of the Spartan Spectrum Dance Team. At SJSU, she studied Human Performance/Fitness with a minor in Nutrition & Food Science and also met Jimmy, her husband of 25 years - needless to say, she is a proud Spartan! During Ms. Jane's college years she had numerous opportunities to sign dance and modeling contracts traveling both home and abroad. With glamour and limelight in the forefront, it was challenging for Ms. Jane to stay in school and bypass many of these offers. She believed then, and still believes now, that an education should come first; and is very forthcoming in sharing these beliefs with her daughters and students.
She did however take one short break from college in 1985, when she was selected by Dole Corporation to be the company’s ambassador and champion dance, modeling and aerobics in Japan. The tour was designed to introduce USA style aerobics to the Japanese culture. While in Japan, Ms. Jane taught classes in schools, hotels, gyms, fitness centers and companies, sometimes conducting up to 3-4 classes per day all at different locations. With extensive modeling experience as well, Dole also scheduled her for several fashion shows as a runway fitness model.
As a professional dancer, Ms. Jane's team experiences include The Golden State Warrior Girls and The San Francisco 49er Gold Rush Team. She frequently represented the team at charity events, promotions, television appearances, hospitals, schools, community events and high-profile social functions. These unique experiences allowed Ms. Jane to be introduced to some of the best choreographers in the World.
Ms. Jane has been featured in Fit and Runner’s World magazines, San Jose Mercury News, San Francisco Chronicle and several local papers. At one point, she traveled Santa Clara County teaching dance and aerobics to many of the large tech companies in Silicon Valley. Ms. Jane was: crowned Mrs. Santa Clara County and Mrs. California in the American Mrs. Pageant in 1990 and 1991 respectively; danced in a Jeep commercial; danced in Superbowl XIX; and appeared on Evening Magazine - to name a few experiences.
For two years, Ms. Jane was the Managing Director of American Spirit Association (ASA) that held 3-5 day camps at colleges all over the country. ASA specialized in Cheer, Song, Dance, Drill, Mascot and Drum-Major training. ASA trained high school and college level teams in preparation for their upcoming competitive seasons. Ms. Jane managed, trained and supervised a team of 70 world-class instructors that were deployed all over the nation. She was responsible for all curriculum development and camp operations.
Ms. Jane was also the Artistic Director of School House Sports (SHS) for two years. SHS was the largest dance studio outreach program in Northern California at one time. SHS offered classes in Ballet, Jazz, Hip Hop and Creative Dance for pre-schools, public schools and private schools in the Bay Area. Ms. Jane was responsible for all curriculum development, training and managed a team of approximately 40 instructors.
Ms. Jane is the former Director of the NBA Golden State Warriors Dance Team and former Creator & Director of Arena Football’s San Jose SaberKittens. Under her direction, the Warrior Girls were one of the most revered and admired dance teams in the NBA. Ms. Jane is also very proud of her participation with the SaberKittens where she named the team for its inaugural season. The owners of both the Warriors and SaberCats gave Ms. Jane full operational control over the dance teams. As director of these two teams, Ms. Jane was responsible for all dance team game-day operations including choreography, music, routines, timing, etc. She also managed and ran tryouts for these teams which included up to 400 applicants per team.
Other noteworthy experiences include: she was the Advisor for the Homestead High School “Equestriettes” for five years; provided dance entertainment for the football and basketball games for De Anza College for two years; and she is currently the proud Director of DAU’s nationally recognized competition team - The Production Company! Ms. Jane is an accomplished choreographer in her own right - her choreography has won numerous national awards.
Her students have won awards & scholarships, received national titles, and attended a wide range of universities, including UCLA, USC, LMU, Julliard, U of A, CSULB, Berkeley, Stanford, Smith and Fordham/Ailey Dance Programs, Tisch School of the Arts at NYU and more. Ms. Jane has had many of her students grow into professional teachers, performers, and choreographers in their own right.
On a personal note, Ms. Jane has been married to Jim, since 1988, who has been a local realtor for over 20 years. Jim and Jane have three daughters, Jessie (1990), Jamie (1993), and Jodie (1995). Ms. Jane has been teaching dance for years and loves teaching and being around the wonderful families at Dance Academy USA.
